Video Encoding and Streaming Engineer en Berlin

At Zattoo we are building and operating on one of the most sophisticated video backends on the planet: we encode hundreds of 24/7 live TV channels (including the most popular TV stations in Europe and the US), we store millions of hours of content and deliver tens of millions of hours of streaming video to our customers every month. Our systems cover the whole chain from ingesting to encoding/transcoding, storing, packaging, securing and delivering video content. This infrastructure serves linear and non linear video data on a multi-Tbps scale.

All this is envisioned, built and maintained by a small team of expert video and streaming engineers. As a Video Encoding and Streaming Engineer (f/m/x) you will keep our video backend up to date by maintaining existing components and implementing improvements. There are lots of exciting topics on the horizon (UHD/HDR, low latency streaming, HTTP/2, content aware encoding, AV1, etc) which will be part of your work. You should bring your own ideas on how to further optimize the architecture and help extending the capabilities of our system every day. You should be curious about the inner works of video encoding and streaming and be able to think and operate at scale.

• Become a part of the core team that maintains, extends and improves our video backend based on state of the art technology
• Collaborate with a highly skilled and passionate team of multi-national engineers to build and operate our video services

• Expert knowledge in C or C++ programming
• Experience with programming in Python or Go
• Experience with video and audio encoding (H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC...) or streaming (HLS, MPEG-DASH...) technologies
• Experience in development and support of production systems used in a 24x7 operations environment
• In-depth knowledge of open source tools like ffmpeg, vlc, libav
• Excellent understanding of operating system / Linux fundamentals
• Experience in working with networking protocols (such as TCP, TLS, HTTP/2)
• Experience diagnosing and troubleshooting complex systems using test tools, network management systems and error reporting systems
• Fluent verbal and written English language skills

  • Experience in analyzing and improving efficiency, scalability, stability, reliability, and performance of CDN infrastructure
  • Having contributed to open source projects related to media playback or streaming
  • Experience with Hollywood grade DRM systems, i.e. Playready, Widevine and Fairplay

  • Network know how, ideally as certified CCNA/CCNP
