We are a travel company, with the tech at its core, currently looking for motivated problem-solvers who will embrace the end-to-end responsibility of building, delivering and evolving relevant products.

As a Staff Software Engineer in lastminute.com, you will work with our Platform and Engineering teams and directly impact the lives of a global population of travellers. You will be involved in designing and building our own scalable and resilient platforms to support an ever growing number of customers.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Being a member of an autonomous, cross-location agile team. Defining best practices and standards.

  • Successfully deliver high-value projects by leveraging your strong technical chops, deep understanding of our systems, and empathy for our travellers.

  • You are responsible for making the impact of changes clear, and ensuring a sound design and approach.

  • You work side-by-side with engineers, product managers, technology leads and individual contributors of varying degrees of seniority, providing mentorship and skills development guidance when appropriate and leading by example.

  • Communicate technical needs and interests to the Product team and others.

  • Balance the need to go fast in the short term with the need to go fast in the long term.

  • Anticipate and act upon issues that arise, providing alternative approaches and solutions.

  • Designing and helping to develop high-quality software by using a range of practices like TDD, Clean Code, simple design etc.

  • Evaluate and create new tools and techniques to facilitate effective development practices.

  • Communicate a clear vision of how the technology can be optimally applied to products.

  • Set the standard for highest quality of work. Lead by example and be proactive in raising concerns as soon as they are observed.

Qualifications

WHAT WE LOOK FOR:

  • B.S./M.S. in Computer Science, proven experience in successfully completing development of two or more complex applications or technologies, or equivalent applicable experience.

  • Strong experience as a Software Engineer programming in OO/FP languages but preferably in JVM: Java, Scala or Kotlin. Also designing or implementing API best practices as well as using design and architectural patterns.

  • Successfully deploying or migrating services/solutions to public clouds (AWS, Azure, GCP… ).

  • Listens a lot. Ask questions to seek clarity. Take the floor when they have information, experience, or perspective to share. Communicates impediments as they arise.

  • Leads complex changes, complicated refactoring, modifications, refactoring, and bug fixes to existing functionality.

  • Participates in high-level architecture discussions and supports the implementation.

  • Excellent analysis, project planning, and schedule estimating skills as applied to multi-person projects. Ability to anticipate and resolve project roadblocks

  • Expert in current software design practices, including modularity, event-driven architecture, functional programming, microservices, object-oriented design, optimization, extensibility, and testability. Stays abreast of industry innovations and developments.

  • Strong communication skills, especially in representing their expertise to a wide range of people. Forges relationships with development personnel throughout the industry.

  • Self-motivated; works independently.

  • Enthusiastic about company and engineering company products. Willing to Generates, enhances, and promotes ideas for useful new projects and technologies.

  • Business-level English; Spanish knowledge is welcome but not required.

Additional Information

Desirable

  • Previous working experience in a startup or product company with high traffic experience.

  • Domain Driven Design is a Plus.

Hiring Process

Candidates for this position can generally expect a hiring process similar to the following one (please consider that based on location and availability the process can be slightly modified).

  • Qualified candidates receive feedback concerning their application from our Recruiting team.

  • Based on role and experience, candidates might be requested to solve a coding exercise to submit on a public repository on Github. Exercise will be assessed by our internal Engineering team.

  • Onsite Systems Design Interview: We will use an online whiteboard to design a solution to a given challenge.

  • Onsite Systems Design Interview Follow-up: We will continue working on the previous challenge with other architects at lastminute.com.

  • General Interview: We will have an one hour talk about technical stuff, personal experiences and analyzing possible production scenarios.

  • You’ll have the opportunity to meet our technical leaders and understand a little bit more about our continuous learning environment!.
