Job Description

At New Relic, we love making tools for software and ops engineers and organizations. Our software helps customers answer their most important questions by allowing them to visualize, explore, and reason about their ops, application, and customer data. If this sounds interesting to you, you should apply!

As Director of Engineering for New Relic Infrastructure, you lead the engineering teams that build our latest product, New Relic Infrastructure (NRI). NRI is used globally by companies of all sizes to monitor their on-premise and cloud based hosts, other infrastructure hardware, software, and services. The NRI teams are working with data at a scale found at few companies using a diverse tech stack (Go, Java, JS, Cassandra, Elasticsearch, Kafka, Mesos/Marathon, many public cloud web services, and more). As a product-first company, we pride ourselves on creating a delightful user experience, and our UI team works closely with designers and product managers every day as part of their craft.

In this role you’ll drive the execution of our product initiatives, drive all engineering aspects of product development, and guide day to day operations of the New Relic Infrastructure Product (UX), Platform, On-Host Integrations, Agents, and Cloud Integrations teams. You will be deeply involved in product planning, project management, people management, and website/service operations including on-call, support escalations, and site reliability. You’ll help teams develop product ideas into real features, grow future technical leaders, and scale our systems at ever increasing rates. As a member of our Barcelona team you will also help shape and grow our European development center. It’s a big job, but it’s exciting, thrilling, and an awesome opportunity to work on the newest product at New Relic.

The most important qualities we’re looking for include:

  • Love of operations, DevOps, monitoring, data, and great product experiences.
  • Team building. You are known for fabulous hiring, talent spotting, and employee growing.
  • Helping teams ship. You have helped teams do full turnarounds, and you have turned good teams into great teams.
  • Hands-on technical management style, a willingness to look at some code and get involved in the details, paired with excellent judgement.
  • High EQ and leadership skills.
  • You speak fluent English.
  • You have the right to work in Spain (EEA,http://europa.eu/about-eu/countries/).

Technical product leadership skills:

  • Product-fu. You’ve developed products within a product-first company, and you have business acumen and entrepreneurial instincts. You are equally comfortable talking with Engineers, Designers, Product Managers, and customers.
  • Web apps. You’ve dealt with complex web apps at scale. You know how to keep systems humming along, and users delighted with your service.
  • Services. You’ve written some services, and your teams have had to keep critical Tier One services running 24x7. On-call, no problem.
  • Installable Software. You know the trust that you hold when you build software that customers install on their machines. Quality, Performance, Reliability, Security: you can't leave one out.
  • People. You will lead staff work related to the business of engineering management. This includes authoring new guidelines on engineering process, various work policy issues, engineering recruitment, diversity/inclusion initiatives, agile/project management practice, and other management changes.

As a rare director role, we are seeking candidates with previous software management experience. Great candidates will have already:

  • Delivered software in a product-first software company.
  • Hired and grown engineering managers, architects, and tech leads.
  • Scaling experience, both technology and organizations.
  • Driven business-changing major architectural changes or new product launches that spanned many teams and locations.

We offer:

  • Competitive salary.
  • Equity compensation plan.
  • Performance reviews twice a year.
  • Work-life balance and flexible schedule.
  • Amazing and fun work environment.
  • Private health insurance for you and your family, including dental coverage.
  • English and Spanish language classes.
  • Office located in the center of Barcelona, very close to public transportation.
  • We provide ergonomic furniture (chairs, desks…) to keep you healthy and comfy.
  • Fresh fruits, snacks and beverages.
  • We support technical meetups, both local and international.
  • We help with relocation.

At New Relic, we hire people who are eager to contribute to our culture, and we empower them to do just that.
