What is a Data Architect at Ontruck
At Ontruck data architect focus on practical applications for data collection and analysis.
As data engineers, we take care of the mechanisms for collecting, organizing, and validating large sets of information. We build, maintain and evolve our data platform and databases. We make data from internal and external sources available. We ensure the data format is usable and understandable. We allow other teams to use the data in a controlled way.
What a Data Architect creates
Data Architect exposes a data lake to the Data Analytics and Data Science teams. The data lake is meant to be a place of discovery for these teams.
More broadly within Ontruck, Data Architect exposes a data warehouse of tables that are structured to be queried quickly and only contain a subset of all the data in the lake. At Ontruck, all of our data goes through the lake before it gets to the warehouse, and only the data that we know is useful and worth cleaning gets to the warehouse.
These tables are meant to be more easily understood and allow for varying levels of access to sensitive data through different schemas.
What you will be doing day to day:
- Improve, maintain, and expand our data processes. At Ontruck we use a mix of tools in constant evolution; Streamsets, Tableau, Airflow, Superset, Druid, Spark, MLeap, Tensorflow.
- Develop our data platform carrying out and reporting on proofs of concept over different tools and ideas.
- Build, maintain, and orchestrate all the components in our data platform.
- Owner over databases. Activities include: performance and configuration improvements, review of the schemas, or apply good practices; among many.
- Work with different sources of data (internals and externals) to process and transform them and make them accessible for other teams.
