✨Let's talk about the role ✨

The Routing convoy is responsible for managing the components of the system that determine which individuals are assigned packages and calculate the distances between two points. This is a highly critical and impactful convoy at Stuart and is the engine of our success! 🚀

In Stuart we are structured into convoys which are made up of a fleet of ships. Ships are basically a squad with a Product Manager, Engineering Manager, Product Designer, Data Scientists, Product Analysts and Engineers. Every Ship’s Engineering Manager in the Routing convoy will report to you. You will be accountable for the sustainable delivery of value of all the ships within that convoy.

As the Engineering Director for the Routing convoy at Stuart, you'll be a pivotal leader within the convoy.

You are expected to be highly technical and keep your technical skills up-to-date but you do not need to be a code contributor. You will be expected to develop a strong affinity with the Business that represents your domain of responsibility and work in close collaboration with the Product Director of the Routing Convoy to ensure a maximum of business value is delivered to the business.

You should be able to understand the technical decisions and the pros and cons of each and you'll work collaboratively with our Product, Analytics, and Architecture teams, aligning on objectives and shaping the technical strategy. This role involves overseeing the sustainable delivery of value, removing impediments, and fostering career growth for your team members.

This role is based in our Barcelona office (Diagonal area) and you should be able to be at the office 2/3 times per week.

What will I be doing? 🤔

    • Shape the technical strategy alongside convoy leaders.
    • Share the company's vision and strategy with your team.
    • Work with Engineering Managers to boost team performance, resolve obstacles, offer support and empowerment.
    • Conduct performance reviews, set goals, and provide feedback. Be a servant leader and apply radical candor to all people in the convoy.
    • Assess resource needs for your team and work on retention and compensation strategies.
    • Take an active role in hiring, ensure a smooth onboarding experience for new hires and encourage mentorship within the team.
    • Measure and prioritize technical debt within the team's codebase and manage internal and external dependencies effectively.
    • Drive operational excellence and reliability.
    • Lead company-wide engineering initiatives.
    • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and mentorship among your team.
    • Exemplify our company values, setting the gold standard for your team.

What do we need from you? 😎

    • Solid experience in leading cross functional engineering teams and managing/coaching/mentoring their engineering managers. You are comfortable in leading a team size of 30+ engineers and managers.
    • Solid engineering background as a strong senior individual contributor in the past and still in touch with engineering challenges. Still coding (i.e. personal projects etc.) is a big plus.
    • Strong sense of product challenges and ability to collaborate with the product & business counterparts as a partner at eye-level.
    • Strong ability to intrinsically motivate the team towards a common vision and help them achieve their goals while providing a servant leadership style.
    • Experience in hiring and retaining top talent and managing high performing teams.
    • Strong ability to provide sustainable delivery while ensuring the career growth and work-life balance of their teams.
    • Strong belief in the value of timely feedback (both positive and growth-oriented) and good track record of providing radical candor.

    • Ideally:
    • Domain expertise in Routing, Maps, Routes, ETAs or similar domains (mobility).
    • In depth functional programming and/or Scala knowledge.
