7 Tips To Get The Most Out Of A Startup Job Fair

One of the best ways to get yourself out there and make contacts in the professional world is by attending job fairs. In the era of online job applications and e-mailing CVs, job fairs are the perfect opportunity to focus on the best way to interact: live conversations.

At JobFluent, we’re convinced career fairs are a great way for both companies and jobseekers to connect and create relationships. For this reason, we’re excited to bring you the 7th JobFluent Barcelona Startup Job Fair.

We’d love for you to get the most out of this opportunity, so here are some tips for the day of the fair:

1. Bring several copies of your updated CV

This is a no-brainer but it needs to be mentioned. Don’t go to the fair empty handed, your CV is your letter of presentation to someone that may be looking into hiring you. Think of it as your player profile. Make sure your Curriculum Vitae is up-to-date with all your tricks and skills.

2. Don’t forget your work portfolio

Now, if your CV is your player profile, then your portfolio is your secret weapon. They say that paper can hold anything but really, it would make a great impression if you have examples that back up what’s listed on your CV. If you can afford it, hand in a pen drive or think of creative ways to present your work to a hiring manager.

3. Follow the startup “dress code”

If you have been following the “startup culture” then you know that we’re all about being casual and comfortable. No suits here! However, this is job fair and good impressions need to be made. A while back, we published a post on What to Wear to a Startup Interview and I think that could be translated to fairs too, check it out!

4. Arrive early

Job fairs can be packed and last for many hours. Hiring managers are standing, talking to people during all this time. I’d say your best bet would be to make it there before they’ve talked to hundreds of prospects so make sure you’re on time!

5. Network and make contacts

Aside looking for a job, fairs are a great way to make contacts and network with people on your field. But, don’t focus only on the companies that interest you, try to get to know people outside your comfort zone or known area. Don’t be afraid to explore and learn about all the companies, you may be pleasantly surprised by what you find.

6. Review your drinking etiquette

While we’re on the networking topic, we all know that an awesome way to mingle is by sharing a nice cold beer. Now, hold it right there, you’re not at a night out with friends. Make sure you control your drinking and keep it professional.

7. Be positive and smile

You’re the one that knows more about yourself. Try to be positive and feel secure of all you have to offer. Positiveness will make the evening super easy to navigate and even get you a brand new job at an awesome startup.
